Guest Post Pushing The Future Job Prospects For College Grads
Guest Post: Pushing the Future: Job Prospects for College Grads This is a guest post by Mariana Ashley. There are only a few instances in your life where you're feeling fully thrilled and totally terrified at the identical time. Skydiving is one of them, and college graduation day is another. College grads are faced with many prospects and overwhelming feelings. There is promise of freedom from ultimate exams and early morning lectures; there are also the looming threats of unemployment, pupil mortgage debt, and different âreal worldâ issues. College graduation is one of those rites of passage that donât really hit us till every week after the very fact. Weâre extracted from our faculty bubbles and plopped into an unstructured world the place the foundations arenât clear. Then weâre told to find a job, pay our payments, and discover a method to be pleased about all of it. Itâs a challenging time. That being mentioned, things do seem to be trying up for latest grads in many ways. While faculty grads lately previous have been shoved i nto a failing economic system without a lot warning, graduates today knew what was coming and could brace for impact. For the previous 4 years, these faculty students sat via their philosophy lectures and literature courses quietly making ready themselves mentally for the unforgiving âreal worldâ that information stations, older siblings, and dejected adults have been talking about. These students have, whether or not they totally notice it or not, spent the past four years preparing for a depressing economic system and a steady, unpromising unemployment fee. All of this means that graduates are higher ready for the brutal realities of the job market theyâre entering. The importance of networking has not been misplaced on the newest graduates. Campus job fairs were packed by mid-spring semester. Students are beginning sooner than in the past. They go to events to seek opportunities for employment, of course, however theyâre additionally making connections at these job gala's , taking essential networking classes from the professional world before entering it. While the economy remains to be struggling, there are more reported jobs in nearly each market, and graduates are coming into a stronger job market than they were just 4 years before. So, with better ready grads and a slightly upturned job outlook, prospects are trying up. Most new grads know (no less than have heard again and again) that instances are going to be tough. A week after graduation, they hear, youâll be sitting in your house (or at your mother and fatherâ home where you now live) you will have submitted your a hundredth resume, and it will hit you: youâre not in Kansas anymore. (or Ohio State, or wherever.) But, youâll make it, should you get out and make connections. As you could have learned in your campus activities, networking is the important thing to success. Itâs not simply who you realize; itâs who is aware of you. Go out, meet folks in the areas that interest you, discuss to them, get to know them, meet their connectionsâ"make things happen. If you'll be able toât find a job immediately, discovering the best volunteer alternative or internship can be the next neatest thing. These positions, while not sometimes properly paying, are perfect environments to increase your skills and your network. Lack of expertise is usually the biggest hurdle most new grads face on their resumes and it makes it more durable to compete the place significantly extra experienced candidates can be found. By volunteering, youâll trade cash circulate for experience and references. Prospects for the longer term are wanting up, but you may want to give the future a push of your individual. Employers Beware - Resume Fraud a Major Problem - Workology
Employers Beware - Resume Fraud a Major Problem - Workology A recent article in the Boston Business Journal reported that according to hiring managers and human resource professionals, the falsification of resumes is a widespread problem. Misrepresentation on a resume or employment application can take two forms: The making of a false or misleading statement, or Omission of significant details about an applicants background or employment history. According to this article, stretching dates to cover up employment gaps is the most commonly-caught resume lie. An applicant may believe that he or she will not be viewed in a favorable light if the resume reflects periods of unemployment. Also, an open period of employment may suggest that the reason for leaving the prior employer may have been for reasons unflattering to the applicant. Other resume misrepresentation may include the following: A false claim that the applicant has obtained a particular academic degree or certificate Received a degree from a particular college or university Has achieved certain technical skills Has received various certifications Exaggerating or misrepresenting certain accomplishments To deter these types of misrepresentations, the employers application or hiring materials should include a statement that any false or misleading representations during the application process or the failure to disclose an important fact will immediately disqualify the applicant from any further consideration for employment. The employer should usually conduct a background check on the applicant. A routine background check is relatively inexpensive. Identifying an applicant who is falsifying his or her resume will justify such an expense. The more critical the position, the more the employer may wish to attempt to verify information provided on a resume. For example, verifying that a college was attended, or a degree received might be important if the position the employer is seeking to fill requires a certain level of intellectual accomplishment. This will also be true if the job must be filled by an individual with a particular level of skill in a technical area. Another technique frequently overlooked by interviewers is the simple step of examining the public record. Today, especially with younger applicants, you may be able to locate interesting, and sometimes revealing, information about the applicant on such Internet pages as MySpace, Facebook, or YouTube. Such pages might confirm the persons resume, or more importantly, show false statements or character or personality traits that the employer may find disturbing. Also, the interviewer might simply use the persons name as a search term in Google. Many times, such a search will be useless, but there is that occasional time when valuable information is revealed. Finally, even though examining and verifying representations on a resume may be important, there is no substitute for excellent interviewing skills. Simply walking a person through his or her resume is usually not very helpful. It is preferable to ask questions that the applicant will not anticipate. It may be useful to give the applicant specific problems and issues, and ask the person how he or she would deal with the problem. Such tactics will give you a glimpse of the applicants ability to express him/herself and respond to very concrete issues the applicant may have to face on the job. A skilled interviewer will structure the interview so that the applicant is doing most of the talking, while the interviewer is listening and observing. Finally, you should resist the temptation, and more importantly convince management to resist the temptation to overlook misrepresentations during the application process because we really need someone. Misrepresentations on a resume or in the application process may reveal a character flaw which could prove harmful to the company in the future if such a person is employed today. Recognize that in a tough job market, applicants may bend the truth, or lie be prepared! Russell J. Top 12 Reasons Overqualified Job Seekers Are Rejected (Tips Included)
Top 12 Reasons Overqualified Job Seekers Are Rejected (Tips Included) Anyone who has spent any time looking for a job understands the disappointment of being rejected by a potential employer. Unfortunately, almost all of us will experience job search rejection at some point in our lives. For overqualified job seekers, however, that rejection can be even more depressing. After all, why would an employer decide to not hire you based on your abundance of qualifications? As it turns out, there are many reasons for such rejections. Is it even possible to be overqualified? Some people wonder whether itâs even possible to be truly overqualified for a job. The reality is that the answer is probably no. Sure, you can have qualifications that far exceed those the job actually requires. But does that mean that youâre overqualified? Technically, no. That extra level of qualification may be impressive, but thereâs really no such thing as having too much knowledge or experience. If there were, we would all stop learning once we achieved competence in our job roles. Nevertheless, there is a perception that some people are overqualified for certain positions. Moreover, some job seekers consider themselves overqualified for those jobs. Perception and beliefs can play a huge role in how you interview for a job and how hiring managers respond to your presentation. And since most people accept the idea that overqualified job seekers exist, many employers may cite it as a reason not to hire you. With that noted, here are the top 12 reasons overqualified job seekers are rejected, followed by some tips to overcome the challenge. Top 12 reasons overqualified job seekers are rejected 1. The employer may believe that you wonât stick around If you are overqualified for a job, employers may wonder whether youâre just looking for a short-term position. They may assume that the company is just a stepping stone to a better job for you. After all, your qualifications mean that you have a lot of opportunities for better jobs. Few employers want to invest in somebody whoâs going to leave in six months or a year. 2. The companyâs concerned about meeting your salary expectations The more qualified you are, the greater your potential earnings. Employers know that and are always concerned about being able to meet expectations. For overqualified job seekers, this can be problematic. That potential employer may just assume that your salary expectations are more than they can offer. Unfortunately, they wonât usually tell you about those concerns, and may just reject you based on their assumptions. 3. Employers often worry that overqualified job seekers wonât do certain tasks Thereâs also a chance that the employer will believe that you wonât be willing to do anything the company needs. That happens with some highly qualified people, as they often think that their time is best spent on the most important tasks. Rather than take a chance, companies will sometimes reject overqualified job seekers out of hand. 4. You might not fit in with the existing group Many hiring managers also worry that those who are overqualified may have difficulty working alongside their colleagues. If youd be the only person on the team with a Ph.D. while the job only requires a high school diploma, hiring managers may worry about how the team would work as a whole. 5. The employer may be worried about having you supervised by younger managers Truly overqualified job seekers tend to be a bit older and more experienced. When leadership and management are younger, they often think twice before hiring older workers. Many young leaders are leery of trying to manage people with more experience and assume that it will be more difficult to get what need from those workers. 6. The company could believe that you will get bored Overqualified job seekers can even be rejected simply because the company thinks that the work will bore them. Job engagement is critical for productivity, so if an employer thinks you will be bored, you probably wonât get hired. 7. Your expertise could be viewed as a threat to existing management Despite their positions of authority, many managers and leaders lack self-confidence. If your resume looks like it might be more suited for their own position, you may seem like a potential threat to their credibility or power. This often happens when you are so qualified that the companyâs managers can easily envision you replacing them. If thatâs the case, then chances are that they will reject you to protect their positions. 8. Some hiring managers wont ask questions regarding their concerns While most of these concerns could be allayed by discussing them in an interview, that doesnât always happen. In fact, some hiring managers are simply too lazy, too busy, or too overwhelmed to delve into these issues. When you dont match what theyre looking for, itâs easier to just reject your application without giving you an opportunity to address the worries. 9. There may not actually be a position to fill Some job postings are not meant to be filled. Hiring managers might want to know what the talent pool looks like, or if there is interest in a position that doesnt yet exist. There are also times when the hiring decision was made before you submitted your resume. If the hiring manager or recruiter already knows who they want to hire, consideration of your resume may be just a formality. This generally occurs in companies where internal policies require a thorough job search. In those instances, managers just go through the motions to fulfill their duty. You donât really have a chance at winning the job. 10. You interviewed poorly It could be that youre at fault for the rejection. Overqualified job seekers can sometimes present themselves as arrogant and overconfident. Or you may be too demanding. Even the most qualified candidates can be passed over for jobs because the people theyd be working with cant imagine actually seeing them on a daily basis. 11. You may not really be overqualified, but the hiring manager uses that excuse to avoid the real reason There are even cases where you may not be overqualified. There could be any number of other reasons your resume isrejected. Some of them may even be questionable, which could cause the hiring manager to describe you as overqualifiedas a way to hide the real motivation for rejecting your application. 12. You might be facing discrimination The final reason on this list is the most serious. Discrimination is still unfortunately at large in hiring and work, and could be the reason your impressive resume isnt getting the results you want. You may wonder about how rejection based on being overqualified plays from a legal standpoint. Is it illegal to discriminate? Like most legal questions, this one depends on the circumstances and nature of the discrimination. For example, you may have a legal case if you are rejected and can demonstrate that it was due to your age, gender, race, or other protected characteristics. However, if you are rejected simply because your qualifications donât align with the companyâs expressed needs, chances are that you will face an uphill battle if you try to seek legal remedy. What to do when youre overqualified for a job The good news is that overqualified job seekers can quickly overcome these challenges preemptively. The following tips can help: 1. Answer their questions in your cover letter Use your cover letter to explain why you want the position. Donât expect the hiring manager to read your mind, since that can lead to all manner of faulty assumptions. Explain why the companyâs job matches your lifestyle and priorities. That can help to put your audiences mind at ease. You might be looking for a lower-level job because you want to return to an earlier point in your career you enjoyed, or you want to work with the next generation of talent in your industry. You might also be transitioning to part-time work or even a new career. You need dont to give every reason why youre seeking this job, but give at least one reason. Finally, you can address that while you are highly qualified for the role, you are eager to learn something at this job. Admit that you dont know everything, but that you are ready and able to fulfill this positions requirements. 2. Keep your resume relevant Donât broadcast unnecessary qualifications. If, for example, your advanced degree might seem to make you overqualified, you can safely (and legally) omit it. Focus your resume and interview on relevant skills and experiences. You want to be qualified: not overqualified. 3. Keep your job search strategic Do some research and locate companies that hire people with your qualifications. Choose companies that are not averse to hiring overqualified job seekers. Sometimes, that can make all the difference in the world. 4. Check your attitude You never want to leave the impression that youâre too good for the job. Donât make it sound like itâs an easy role for you to fill. Instead, express genuine excitement about the opportunity to take on a new and different challenge and contribute to the companyâs success. Summary Overqualified job seekers may struggle to avoid rejection, but itâs not an impossible task. Learn to recognize why you might be rejected and work to address those employer concerns as best you can. And remember, persistence pays off in the end. Good luck with your job search! The Pros and Cons of Video Resumes
The Pros and Cons of Video Resumes Job applicants know that the first step to getting hired is crafting the best resume for the position. Resumes are the first thing recruiters see. If they donât pay attention to your resume, you donât have a chance of getting in. Resumes are truly important, and while crafting a professional-looking, 3â"page resume might be the way to get that dream job, you should know that it is really up to you, the position you are applying for, and the company you wish to work in. Sometimes, these long and formal-looking resumes end up at the bottom of the pile, while the more creative ones get noticed. The secret to this is to be relevant to the company you are applying for. Most people submit the hard copies of their resumes. For freelancers, they usually submit their resumes online. Sometimes it is in PDF format, or in JPEG format. These days, there is another kind of resume: the video resume. It is interesting to submit a video resume, and if you are interested in doing so, read up first on the pros and cons of turning over such a unique format: Pros: Unique Video resumes are very unique. Once a recruiter sees a video in his pile of resumes, his curiosity will definitely be piqued, and he will want to take a look at it. As you know, getting their attention is the first step. With a video resume, youâve definitely achieved that objective. Visible Your personality, skills and talents are evident immediately. Video resumes either feature you, speaking confidently into the camera, or a compilation of all your previous works. Whatever your execution, your character and skills are evident right from the start. If you are applying for a creative position, and you hand in a video resume showing all your creative projects, it is very easy for your recruiter to see this, and immediately appreciate what you can offer to the company. Control Itâs like your initial interview, but with more control. Really, a video resume is just you answering all their typical interview questions. Of course, since it is a controlled environment, you can appear unruffled and confident, and you will come off as highly competent for the job. Cons: Informal It is still informal. While video resumes may be impressive, it may still come off as an informal execution. After all, some companies still choose to do the traditional way of hiring employees. Unconventional Viewing your resume may not be as convenient as a printed piece of paper. If your recruiter wants to clarify a certain item on your credentials, he canât just easily glance at a piece of paper, he has to load your video and go through the whole thing again. This might turn out to be tedious, so it is best to print out a brief summary of your accomplishments and credentials just to provide them with a quick and convenient way to review your âpresentation.â Important note: If you are not skilled in video editing, your video resume might look like crap. If you canât shoot yourself in a well-lit area, and if the sound isnât that great, then forego the idea of submitting a video resume. It will only make you look incompetent and highly unprofessional.

6 Tips to Getting the Most Out of a Conference SHRM 2017 Edition
6 Tips to Getting the Most Out of a Conference SHRM 2017 Edition This post is sponsored by Perengo â" A Programmatic Recruitment Platform. Be sure to connect with their Director of Sales at the SHRM 2017 Annual Conference (June 18-20). Learn how programmatic job ads can produce results for your organization. Getting the most out of a conference requires just the right balance of planning and organization. With todayâs conferences boasting jam-packed speaker lineups and whirlwind networking schedules, itâs best not to leave success up to chance. The upcoming SHRM 2017 conference offers plenty of opportunities to make valuable connections, gain new leads or partnerships, and learn about the top HR trends. Our first post discussed the ways you can rock your conference preparation â" but what happens on the big day and the week after? Letâs look at 6 helpful tips for conquering the conference and follow-up. 1. Review goals and prep your team Itâs easy to get lost in the chaos of a conference and forget why youâre there in the first place: to achieve the goals you have set for your company. If youâre traveling to the conference with a team, you already have strength in numbers. Gather one last time in the days leading up to the conference to review strategies and delegate tasks based on everyoneâs unique abilities. A well-prepped team will also be more adept at managing inevitable distractions. It may be worthwhile to keep the 80/20 rule in mind, which states that approximately 80% of your results come from just 20% of your efforts. Be sure to direct those efforts wisely! 2. Get in the networking mindset Many seasoned conference attendees would agree: the most important benefit of attending a major industry event is the unparalleled networking. Not a networking pro? Donât sweat it â" youâre not alone. If schmoozing is not appealing, try to frame it in a way that works for you. Listen more and talk less; remain genuinely interested in the wants and needs of anyone you come in contact with. You might be surprised about where curiosity takes you. 3. Stay organized and take notes You will likely amass quite the collection of business cards over the course of several days. While itâs tempting to assume youâll remember each and every interaction, you are better off coming up with a method of on-the-go organization. Jot down key information about each contact as soon as possible after your meeting. Include what you discussed, whether or not there is potential for collaboration, and maybe even a suggestion for how to follow-up. Active note taking throughout the event will cut your post-conference work in half. 4. Make yourself visible online The digital sphere during a conference is buzzing with conversation. Be sure to tag your social media posts with the designated conference hashtag like #SHRM 2017 and offer your own perspective online. Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram are great tools for gaining visibility in front of an interested and engaged audience. Being active online also puts you in an approachable position for potential customers. 5. Take care of yourself A multi-day conference is like a marathon, not a sprint. Avoid burning out on the first day by taking good care of yourself. Pause for breaks when you need them, and donât beat yourself up for missing a presentation or veering from your original schedule. Plan mealtimes into your day instead of grabbing an empty calorie muffin. Reach for green tea in place of that third cup of coffee. Go easy on the drinks during networking parties. You will thank yourself on the third day when youâre clear-headed and feeling accomplished. 6. Follow up and offer insights In the days after the conference, hopefully you will have some time to collect your thoughts and review your notes. Following up is a crucial step in your conference experience, as itâs the opportunity to turn your prospects into bona fide business partners or customers. Send thanks and personal greetings to all your contacts letting them know how much you enjoyed meeting them. If you had discussed any next steps in person, bring those up again to get the ball rolling. Blogging about your experience â" or sharing insights youâve gained from the event â" can also be a great way to amplify and spark conversation in the weeks after the conference. Donât be afraid to pass on your knowledge and get creative with any feedback you receive in return. We hope these tips have given you some guidance to conquer SHRM 2017 and any major industry conference youâll attend in the future. Good luck, and see you in New Orleans.
